Roles

 On Whack Sparrow, I was a level and technical designer. The work that I did included:​

  • Creating character and enemy AI.

  • Designing and implementing the functionality of the main character.

  • Designed and created the final level to the game

  • Created the AI for the final boss

  • Implementing Audio for sound effects

Starting Area

For designing the final Level of Whack Sparrow, most of the overall layout was dictated by the final boss fight.

The initial starting area introduces the player to the level and has basic skeleton enemies scattered about. Beyond the first section lies the Pirate Captains stronghold where the main fight begins.

After the stronghold the level progresses to a cove area that contains platforming sections leading up to the second phase of the fight with the Pirate Captain.

 The level then leads to a town marketplace where the final phase of the boss fight will occur.

I was responsible for creating the combat system for the player character and all enemy types in Whack Sparrow. I also set up all of the animations for basic locomotion and attacks for the player character and the enemies.

There are 3 basic enemy types found in Whack Sparrow.

​

Skeleton - The skeleton enemy type roams around the map when not engaged with the player character. When the player is within sight of a skeleton, the skeleton will pursue the player character and attack when close enough to hit the player character.

​

Pirate Henchmen - The pirate henchmen are called by the pirate captain to attack the player character. The henchmen are relentless and chase down the player character until either the player character or the henchman is defeated.

Cannon Pirate - The cannon pirate will shoot a cannon at the player character when the player character is at a distance. Once the player character closes in on the cannon pirate, the cannon pirate will dismount the cannon and attack the player character using melee attacks.

 

The player character also has bombs at his disposal that can damage enemies from a distance, and the player character can mount to cannons in the world to attack enemies and create new paths by firing at elements of the environment.

Pirate Captain

The pirate captain is the main boss found in Whack Sparrow. The fight consists of three phases that are spread across the final level.

​

The fight starts at the top of a cliff face in the captain's stronghold. During the first phase the captain will alternate between firing a cannon at the player character and attacking the player character directly. When the captain is mounted to the cannon he also directs pirate henchmen to attack the player character.

​

The second phase takes place on a ship in the cove area and is entirely melee based combat. Pirate henchman are also summoned during this phase and cannons from near by ships are constantly firing at the player during the phase.

​

The final phase takes place in the town market overran by skeletons. This phase is similar to the second phase, but creates a different approach by having buildings to block cannon fire, but also having the skeletons roaming around to deal with.
